There isn't a whole lot I love about this town besides my family, Sonoran hot dogs and the monsoons. It's true. There just isn't much here that tickles my fancy but then there are these quirky little spots, that really I haven't discovered until now, that make it a little bit of a special place.
Tucked away in the old Barrio (which is a cool neighborhood on its own) is El Tiradito Shrine. The old brick wall is surrounded by candles, flowers, and random memorabilia people leave there in prayer. There are tons of stories that explain why its there some including tragic love triangles and forbidden love but what is known for certain is that this is the only Catholic shrine dedicated to a buried sinner in the country. Now I think people just make it what they want it to be, lighting candles and praying for loved ones. The crumbling wall is full of little notes probably prayers and stories of lost love. I think these days it's hard to find places with meaning like this here, especially if you're not religious.
For us it made a great backdrop to get some great pics. We didn't light a candle or say a prayer (although Koji did pull some flowers and moved some stuff around which I am hoping is not bad juju) but we enjoyed it nonetheless. And doesn't he just look so fabulous and Dia de Los Muertos in skulls? I think so.

Headed back to our beloved & much missed Southern California for the weekend. I hope to get some good photos and tons of sun. LOVE this cake and it's what I would pick to interpret the upcoming holiday.

"There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all"

My little bear turned 1 last month so we had to go big for his first birthday. I decided on a dance party theme since Koji is such a little dancer and had originally thought it would have more of an 80's hip hop feel but it turned out to be more neon theme which was perfect.

Koji was actually feeling pretty sick the entire weekend so when him and his daddy walked in and he was sporting those red wayfarers like it was nobody's business I was pretty impressed. He wore them for a short time but looked so adorable when he did...making his mama proud. Despite the sickness, he was a trooper and we all enjoyed a good dance lesson & plenty of toxic colored candy!

Can't wait for more Koji birthdays to scheme...

Big thank you to my dearest Tracey & Anthony who put up with my picky directions and produced the amazing graphics and paper goods.

Chasing Trains & Plains

After a lovely organic Easter lunch outside of Tubac we were directed to drive back through this unpaved road along the train tracks. The somewhat nerve-wrecking drive quickly became a little adventure and a perfect photo op, however, when we stopped somewhere between the farmlands of Southern Arizona and the freeway.

I haven't been doing much outfit blogging because I'm working on a new blog with my sisters which should be super fun so stay tuned. Meanwhile here's a little recap of our version of Easter.

Akiko's Closet: Shade of Spring

Spring is here although for me my seasons have been all thrown off by the travels and the fact that it's 90 degrees in AZ. Balls hot. At least I can still have the trends Spring brings. Coral is one of my fave colors so it's awesome that this season I can find everything in Coral which makes it easy to do a little color blocking.

I celebrated my 27th birthday (yikes) last week with a Cowboys and Indians themed dinner party which turned out to be a lovely evening. The weather and setting were a perfect canvas for me to play with.

For the decor I collected old bottles and vases from the local thrift stores and filled them with various desert plants that I found around here. I also bought some more succulents to add to my collection used those through out. To add an element of fun I used figurines, a cow head and cowboy boots around the yard.

The menu consisted of sliders, coleslaw, grilled corn, BBQ chips, and a giant jar of pickles while we sipped on root beer, Jarritos, Iced Tea and Guinness. The beautiful ganache covered cake was made by my sister Hiromi. So profesh looking huh?

The Arizona sunset made for a lovely backdrop into the night where we sat around the chimenea for a while talking and laughing. I think I will stay 27 for a while.

Merry March

March is the best month for 3 very good reasons:

1. It's my birthday month.

2. St Patrick's Day (which is undoubtedly the best holiday ever) falls in March.

3. Guinness is on sale at Costco. It's the only time of the year this happens.

'Tis the season to be merry.

So my birthday is next week and I decided that in the spirit of us being in the desert and all I would do a "Cowboys & Indians" themed dinner party. Political correctness aside, I think it will be a lovely event with plenty of feathers and whisky.

Check back soon for pics of the party!

Back to life or something like that (and congrats to our winner)

Finally back from Costa Rica and adjusting to our new life in AZ. I'm glad to be home and ready to get back to working and blogging and MY CLOTHES. Gawd I missed them. I think the thing I will miss most about my Central American vacation is the fruit and being able to order a drink made from fresh fruit at any and every restaurant but regardless, it's good to be home.

AND...

Congratulations to our winner and my new follower Liz! She gets $25 to shop at any of the 200+ CSN Stores...woop woop.

Happy Wednesday!
